Software Updates
Explain

The last security measure which can be put in place is the fact that users can simply update their software. Updating software is important because out of date software can be dangerous to a system as it can crash and make it unusable. With many updates that happen to software, the appearance can change. This is usually in the form of the user interface. For example, new buttons may be added as well as new features may be added. This is the case with most software because the creators want to better the software for the users. Software updating is important for compatibility purposes. Compatibility is a term used in computing to mean that software or hardware is able to work together without errors. For example, if a user had a computer and they had the windows XP operating system and tried to download an anti-virus which didn’t work for XP then that user’s PC would be a risk because of compatibility issues. Software updating can also improve performance because it can be used to accelerate the speed In which the computer or system runs. This is because if the version of software that is being used is very old, then it is going to run very slowly but when updated it will perform faster. Along with this, software updates can be used literally for updates. For example, some updates may be that it supports other types of OS’s such as that with Windows and Kit Kat. They can also be used in order to fix software which bugs are found on the system and this can be seen when Apple released iOS 8, there was a bug where someone could instantly get into the phone without needed the pass code and so they immediately updated the phone in order to fix this bug/glitch. Sometimes software updates because of a security breach, as I’ve just mentioned and this is dangerous because it means that people are having access to data in which they shouldn’t be able to access. By keeping software updated, the system and data will stay secure.
Example

Relating this back to my case study, Vodafone will constantly update the software that they use so that there will be no issue with their computers, systems, data and their products. For example, Vodafone may use windows 7 software for their operating system, however if one of the products they use updates as says that they now only update to Windows 10 then Vodafone would update to Windows 10. This is because of the sheer amounts of data that may need to be used on this particular piece of software. They would do this because if they didn’t there would be numerous amounts of issues relating back to this, such as compatibility issues, security breaches, data fixes etc. If they didn’t update their OS it would also mean that hacker may be able to gain access to the system because of the fact that Windows 7 is older than Window 10, which may have more vulnerabilities.
