Firewall Configuration

Explain

When talking about firewalls, they are one of the main pieces of security which are able to keep data and systems safe. This is because of what they do and what they do is filter traffic coming into the systems, to see what their purpose is and if they can be authenticated. However, in order to do this they must first be configured by the user and depending upon which type of firewall this is, hardware or software, then there are different processes in doing this. Hardware firewalls are installed through the motherboard and software firewalls are installed through software application .exe files. Configuring the firewall will allow the users to customise the specific criteria, which gets filtered out, blocked, and prevented access to the system and network. They are basically filtering out information and data packets which are being registered as unsafe for the network and systems. It will stop outside access from interacting with the system and data saved within the system by filtering out trusted and untrustworthy sources, allowing the trusted sources in and not allowing untrustworthy sources in.

Example

Vodafone would use a firewall to protect the organisation, and this is because they have thousands of computers and each of those computers has access to the internet. If not protected, those computers could be attacked and be left vulnerable to attack by malicious packets from hackers. Vodafone would also use firewalls so that the flow of traffic can be controlled through the network. Due to the vast amount of computers which are connected to the network, flow of traffic is important otherwise data will not send swiftly to the destination which is require because of congestion on the network. In order to be quick, the firewalls at Vodafone will inspect small segments of packets to see if the key information matches in a database of trusted data, and if so then the packet is sent off. If not, the firewall will discard the packet.
