Passwords

Explain

A password is a series of letters and numbers which are used to gain access to accounts online. It is unique to the account holder and user. It is a way of proving that you have the authority to gain access to a certain area. As it used to gain access to certain areas, it is imperative that the user create a strong password. To create a strong password, there should be a variety of both numbers and uppercase and lowercase letters. Some websites and applications will allow special characters such as ‘!’ and “:” which will make it extra difficult for someone to guess. Strong passwords will have between six and twelve characters. Passwords which can be easily guessed are classified as week passwords and these will usually include a name, date of birth or a pet of some kind. When logging into accounts, it’s important that users log off when they are finished using the account and the reason for this is because someone can easily change settings and steal data if the user is still logged in. Passwords should never be written down or be in the physical form, and this is because anyone read it and guess the password for a certain account and gain access. This will put the account holder at serious risk of being hacked. It is also important that users change their passwords every so often so that it’s harder to guess. It also keeps the data safe.

Example

Relating this back to my case study, Vodafone uses passwords on a daily basis. This is for the employees in the stores. They will each have an individual log in that protects their data from anyone else’s. It also keeps the data secure from outsiders who visits the shop. For example, if a customer came in and there was a user logged in at a computer and no employee’s around, the customer could easily look at any record that they wanted and steal information. The system and data would be vulnerable. But if the system needed a username and password before allowing access, then the customer would not be able to look at any information.
