Call Backs

Explain

Call backs are a security precaution in which a user receives a call back from a company in order to verify that they are who they say they are. This authenticates the user. The user will first call the company themselves and then the company will call them back using the registered phone number on their databases. This verifies that the person did in fact call them in the first place. After this, the user will be asked a couple of security questions such as what is the user’s username, email, password and other information which may be required. Once the information has been confirmed by the user and verified by the company, the user will be allowed access onto a system.

Example

For example, Vodafone field engineers could be at a house call and they need to verify information, and for this they would call up Vodafone’s head office and then they would call the engineer back. This would verify the engineer’s identity and then the engineer would use his ID number etc. to verify his job occupation so that he could gain information to the company details. This would allow the engineer to log onto the system using the details provided about the customer from head office.
