Use of VPN's

Explain

The use of VPN’s can also help to keep systems and data secure. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it is a secure network connection that consists of public wires or a public network, and this is usually the internet or a network provided via an ISP. VPN’s add security to both public and private networks; which can be seen when using the internet and using the Hotspot from mobile phones. VPN’s will allow users to share files securely and this protects the data because of the protocols which are used. VPN’s will use a lot of encryption protocols and secure tunnelling techniques in order to encapsulate data which is being transferred. It masks the IP address of the client so that it cannot be traced back. For example, a user could be based in England, UK but when using the VPN it could say that the user is located in New York, USA. Encryption allows users to access a network from varied locations and this is accomplished by using a public telecommunications network (the internet).

Example

Vodafone would use a VPN for business purposes and security purposes. For example, Vodafone may have an employee who is high up in the organisation and wants access to the private network in order to send sensitive documentation; they would use a VPN in order to gain remote access to the network from a remote location. They could then send the documents and they would be secure. They would have to have authorisation by supplying a username and password in order to access the network.
