Level of Access to Data

Explain

When talking about level of access to data, what is meant by this is access controls to the system. It is security measure which can be put in place in order to keep files more secure which are on the system. It will keep confidential files and sensitive documents away from eyes that are not authorised to view the data. It is the action of giving certain people privileges and permissions to access certain data, systems and resources. The permissions work in levels, for example in a college setting students have very limited access to data except their own and teachers get a better range of data in which they can view, however cannot change settings. Administrators and network administrators have the highest level of accessibility to the data on the college machines. People will higher levels of access get the ability to read, write and execute data. The read privilege means that the user had the permission to read documents, however they cannot adjust them with writing and do not have permission to execute programs. The write privilege means that the user has the ability to modify and create new documentation. The execute privilege means that the user has the permission to execute a program, for example installing and opening programs. These permissions can be mixed and matched to create a level of access to data for a certain user.

Example

Vodafone also has privileges and permissions and they depend upon how high up in the company that the user is. For example, an employee who has only just started to work at the company is only going to have read permissions. A manager may have both the read and write permissions for documents. An administer working in Human Resources may have read, write and execute privileges and this is because they are trusted and they have to be able to do all of these things in order to complete their daily tasks for their job title.
